Madikwe River Lodge

Madikwe River Lodge Location

Madikwe River LodgeMadikwe River Lodge (the full name: Madikwe River Lodge Three Cities) is situated inside the borders of the 75,000 hectare, malaria-free Madikwe Game Reserve, located in the North West Province of South Africa, bordered by  Botswana in the north, the Dwarsberg Mountains to the south, and the Groot (Great) Marico River, a tributary of the Limpopo River to the east. This Madikwe safari lodge is one of only a few safari lodges in this reserve located on the banks of the only perennial river in Madikwe, the Groot Marico River, towards the north-eastern corner of the reserve. In addition to this the eastern airstrip is only about 5 kilometers away, which makes it very accessible for guests who prefer to go there by air rather than by car. Madikwe River Lodge’s location on a perennial river gives it some distinct advantages, since the perennial Groot Marico River is the only natural constant water source in a relative dry area. This means that game viewing from your own, shady private deck is a given – where there’s water, there will be wildlife – from an elephant to a bushbaby. Many satisfied customers testify to this and point this out as one of the very special features of this lodge. And don’t forget about the birds. The riverine eco-system  provides a safe habitat for many of the more than 350 different species of birds of Madikwe Game Reserve. The ongoing bird sounds throughout the day contribute substantially towards the true African bush experience. (Don’t forget to take your binoculars along! For more information on binoculars, you could visit Binoculars Reviewed or Pocket Binoculars.)

Morning Game drives leave at approximately 07h00 and return for brunch at about 10h30. Evening Game Drives leave at approximately 15h30 and return at 19h00 for dinner. The 60+ mammals you can expect to see in the reserve include the Big Five and the “Super Seven” (Big Five plus cheetah and African wild dog). Madikwe River LodgeThe wild dog in particular is a speciality of Madikwe. Wild Dogs were trans-located to Madikwe Game Reserve in 1994. Only 3000 to 5000 of this highly endangered species are still left in the world and  this game reserve has gone to great lengths to ensure the maintenance of its clans. It also successfully introduced new wild dogs from other reserves.
  • Daily bush walks are also organized. They are conducted by experienced game rangers, who share their intimate knowledge of the bush and animals with you.
  • Birding: Being a transition zone between the Kalahari thornveld and bushveld ecological regions of Southern Africa, as many as 350 bird species can be seen in Madikwe and these include many interesting raptors.
  • Special interest drives can also be arranged.
